Launched in 1989 the lightweight two seater rear wheel drive front engine car quickly became a big seller with over 40,000 models sold between 1989 to 1997. The car was originally designed and developed due to Mr Yamamoto who would later became the chairman of MAZDA Motors. Famously asking Bob Hall a motor trend magazine journalist and expert on Japanese cars, what should they build in the future during a visit in 1976. Bob Hall noted that their was a gap in the market for a classic British inexpensive roadster car with the legendary MG B, Triumph TR7 and Triumph Spitfire no longer in production.
Rustproofing the MAZDA MX 5 roadster car
During the early 1980s Bob Hall started to work for Mazda USA in the product planning department. With Mr Yamamoto now the chairman remembering their conversation in 1976, he encouraged Bob to research and develop the affordable roadster concept. Along with the assistance of Mark Jordan a car designer they continued to develop their ‘light weight sports’ car concept whilst based at the California MAZDA Design studios. The concept was approved in 1983 via the MAZDA ‘Offline 55’ program with the prototype vehicle being further developed in conjunction with MAZDA Tokyo. Automotive designers and engineers worked together with key five specific requirements for the affordable roadster 2 seat sports car.
- The engine should be positioned in front of the driver but behind the front axle for 50:50 weight distribution
- To maximise tyre performance including road grip and stability of the car all wheels should be attached by wishbone or multi-link suspension.
- Build a car that is light and compact as possible without compromising any safety requirements.
- Create a 2 seater cockpit that would have no wasted space whilst providing a great comfortable driving position.
- Sharpen the throttle response with a power plant frame that provides a solid connection between the rear-mounted differential.
